Car Hire in Albania: A UK Traveller's Complete Guide
UK driving licence, green card rules, deposit model, road sides — everything British travellers need to know before hiring a car in Albania.
Is a UK Driving Licence Valid in Albania?
Yes — a full UK driving licence is valid in Albania. You do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to hire or drive a car there. Albania accepts UK licences because the country follows EU driving regulations for tourism, even though it is not an EU member state. Make sure your licence is current and not provisional.
One thing to check: if your licence was issued before 1997, it may use the older green paper format. Rental agencies prefer the modern credit-card-format photocard licence. If yours is older, get a counterpart check code from the DVLA before you travel.
Do You Need a Green Card for Albania?
This is the most important thing UK travellers often overlook. Since Brexit, British car insurance policies no longer automatically extend to Albania. If you are driving your own car from the UK, you need to contact your insurer to confirm Albania is covered — many will issue a Green Card as proof, and some charge an extra premium.
If you are hiring a car through RidePrise, this is handled for you. Our partner agencies provide local third-party insurance as part of the hire. You do not need a UK Green Card for a hired car — the vehicle's insurance policy covers Albania.
How Does the Deposit Work?
Albania car hire through RidePrise uses a split-payment model that many UK travellers find reassuring:
- Online: pay a small holding deposit (typically €30–50) to secure your booking
- At pickup: pay the remaining balance directly to the local agency in cash or by card
There is no large credit card block or security hold. Our agencies do not require a credit card — a debit card or cash at pickup is fine.
Which Side of the Road?
Right side — the same as France, Germany, Spain, and the rest of continental Europe. If you have driven in Europe before, you will feel at home immediately. Albania has a modern highway network linking Tirana to the coast and borders, with clear European-style road signs.
"Car Hire" vs "Car Rental" — Is There a Difference?
No — they are the same thing. "Car hire" is the standard British English term; "car rental" is the industry default used across North America and on most international booking platforms. In Albania, local agencies use "rental" in their English signage, but they are offering exactly the same service.
When Is the Best Time to Hire a Car in Albania?
| Time | Conditions | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| April – May | Mild (18–24°C), green hills, quiet roads | Low |
| June | Warm sea, beaches open, pre-peak crowds | Moderate |
| July – August | Peak season, 30–35°C, busy coast | High — book early |
| September | Sea still warm, crowds thin, excellent drives | Moderate |
| October – November | Autumn colours, mountain drives, very quiet | Low |
For UK travellers combining beach and inland exploration, June and September are the sweet spots — warm enough to swim, uncrowded enough to enjoy the roads, and typically 20–30% cheaper than August.
Airport Pickup or City Pickup — Which Is Easier?
Airport pickup is easier for most UK visitors, for two reasons. First, you land, collect your bags, and meet your partner agency representative in the arrivals hall — no taxi or transfer needed. Second, Tirana city-centre traffic can be disorienting on your first day. Starting at the airport removes that friction.
Tirana Rinas Airport (TIA) is 25 km from the city centre — about a 30-minute drive on the highway. Once you are in the car, the road into the city is well signed. If you are arriving by ferry from Corfu directly into Saranda, city pickup in Saranda is also available.
