Taking a Rental Car Across Albania's Borders

Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Greece all sit within a few hours of Tirana, and a rental car is the practical way to reach them. The paperwork is not complicated, but it has to be arranged before you collect the car.

Before you book

Country by country

Kosovo

No Green Card needed: Albania and Kosovo recognise each other's motor insurance. The written authorisation letter is still required.

Montenegro

Green Card extension required, added to the policy before pickup.

North Macedonia

Green Card extension required, arranged with the rental before pickup.

Greece

Green Card extension required, and not every partner permits Greece: some Albanian insurers exclude it, so ask before you plan the trip.

FAQ

Can I take a RidePrise rental car out of Albania?

Yes, to Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and in most cases Greece, as long as you declare it when you book. The partner prepares a written authorisation letter and, for every country except Kosovo, a Green Card insurance extension. Neither can be arranged at pickup or at the border.

Do I need a Green Card to drive to Kosovo?

No. Albania and Kosovo recognise each other's motor insurance, so the car's Albanian third-party cover applies in Kosovo. You still need the written authorisation letter from the rental partner.

How much does cross-border permission cost?

RidePrise partners charge a one-off fee for the rental rather than a daily surcharge. The amount depends on the partner and the destination, and it is confirmed before you complete the booking.

Can I drive an Albanian rental car to Greece?

Usually, but not always. Some Albanian agencies exclude Greece from their insurance entirely, so ask before booking if Greece is part of the plan. Allow extra time at the border too, because it is a Schengen entry point.

Which border crossing should I use for Kosovo?

Morinë to Vërmicë, reached on the A1 Nation's Highway past Kukës. It is the main crossing and puts you in Prizren shortly afterwards. Expect queues in July and August.

Can I arrange cross-border permission when I pick the car up?

No. The authorisation letter and the Green Card extension are issued by the partner's insurer in advance. Asking on the day of pickup is too late.

What happens if I reach the border without the paperwork?

The border police turn the car back, and driving abroad without valid insurance would leave you personally liable for any damage. It is not a risk worth taking.
